Understanding Surprise: Between Amazement and Distraction

Understanding Surprise: Between Amazement and Distraction 🎁

with the EMBRACE Squad

Surprise is one of the most powerful emotions one can experience. It stops us in our tracks, shifts our attention, and opens us up to something new.

As part of the EMBRACE CERV PROJECT’s #KnowEmotions campaign, we explore emotions through the lens of psychologist Robert Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotions, where surprise sits between amazement and distraction. It’s the emotion we feel when something unexpected happens and our mind needs a moment to catch up.

In our new animated EMBRACE video on Surprise, children see how surprise can look and feel different (wide eyes, frozen moments, sudden smiles) and how it doesn’t have to be overwhelming or scary.

🎁 A quiet moment suddenly changes, capturing attention.
😲 A child pauses, surprised by unexpected news or kindness.
😊 With support, surprise turns into curiosity, joy, or confidence.

Surprise helps children learn flexibility. It teaches them that not everything is predictable – and that’s okay. With caring adults and peers nearby, children learn to pause, process, and respond instead of reacting impulsively.

By talking openly about surprise, parents and educators can help children:

  • Understand sudden emotional shifts
  • Stay grounded when distracted or overstimulated
  • Turn unexpected moments into learning and growth

Through animation, emotional literacy, and participatory learning, the EMBRACE CERV PROJECT supports children, families, and educators in building emotional awareness and resilience, one feeling at a time.
