Bridging the Gap in Child Mental Health: Reflections from the EMBRACE CERV Regional Conference in Iași
The statistics surrounding child mental health in Romania are a call to action. With 1 in 5 children facing mental health challenges and a severe shortage of school counselors, the need for a systemic overhaul has never been more urgent.
On May 14th, the EMBRACE CERV project took a major step toward addressing this crisis by hosting a landmark Regional Conference in IaČ™i. The goal was simple but ambitious: move the conversation from “knowing” there is a problem to “acting” on a solution.
A Convergence of Expertise
The conference wasn’t just another meeting; it was the assembly of a functional ecosystem. Over 100 participants gathered to break down the silos between different sectors.
- Policy & Education: Leaders from UNICEF Romania, the Romanian Parliament, and school boards discussed how to fix the structures that often let children fall through the cracks.
- Research & Innovation: Experts from UAIC and digital platforms explored how data and even AI can help teachers identify mental health triggers earlier.
- Public Health: Representatives from the Socola Psychiatric Institute and local authorities emphasized that mental health must be treated as a fundamental public priority.
- Civil Society: NGOs like Terre des hommes Romania, Save the Children, and World Vision shared proven models of care that are already making a difference on the ground.
Moving from Theory to Reality
The “perfect storm” of bullying, excessive screen time, and a lack of emotional education requires more than just a healthy lifestyle curriculum. It requires a support system.
The IaČ™i conference highlighted that when we connect the “front line” (teachers and parents) with the “framework” (policymakers and researchers), we create a safety net that actually holds. The energy in the room was a testament to the fact that Romania is ready for this integrated approach.
